What is Poplar?Poplar is a high-quality hardwood that tends to be green in color. It comes from the genus Liriodendron, which is commonly known as the tulip tree. Intriguingly enough, there is also a genus of tree called Populus which is also called Poplar, but the Poplar that is commonly used for stairs, cabinets, and other furniture purposes is the Liriodendron genus.
Populus is a plant genus that is native to the northern half of the world. Poplar is also refered to as Aspen, and Cottonwood. Populus can grow around 15 to 50 meters tall with trunks that can be up to 2.5 meters in diameter. Populus is used for the manufacture of paper but is also known to be an inexpensive hardwood used for pallets and plywood.
The Poplar that is most commonly used as wood is also called as tulip Poplar or yellow Poplar. The tree can be more than 50 meters tall but is more commonly seen between the 18-50 meter range with a trunk that is 60 to 120 centimeters in diameter.
Poplar as WoodPoplar or Tulipwood is fine-grained and stable wood. Cabinets and furniture frames are the most common products made from poplar wood. Also, when you see cheap furniture that are told to be made by just “hardwood”, that furniture is made from Poplar.
Poplar is moderately resistant to rotting so it’s not great for building ships. It has, however, some applications for light aircrafts.
Poplar is a good wood to use because:
1. It is easy to paint and stain
2. It is hard enough to accept nails and screws without breaking
3. It rarely has knots, or if it does have knots, it only has very few.
For these reasons, Poplar is a great wood for stairs. It can be made into a beautiful wooden stair design. Consider Poplar for your next stair design project!
